National Cat Health Month - A Time To Focus On All Things Feline

National Cat Health Month - A Time To Focus On All Things Feline

February is National Cat Health Month, a time to celebrate all things feline. Officially it’s a national month in the US, but so important that we wanted to highlight it here in the UK too! The month is designed to highlight cat health and wellbeing. It’s a time to ensure that we are looking after our cats and are doing everything we can for their emotional and physical wellbeing. Whether you have an indoor kitty or an outdoor one, it’s essential that they have everything they need for a healthy active lifestyle. Here we take a look at some key areas to concentrate on, to ensure your cats are as healthy as can be.   Things We Can Do To Keep Our Cats Healthy  Check that they have a suitable diet Cats need a complete diet to keep their minds and bodies in tip-top condition. They are the athletes of the animal world, naturally spending much of their day running and climbing. This means that it’s essential for them to get the correct nutrients and minerals that they need to keep up their physical fitness. There are many cat food types available - some are tailored to specific breeds, some are designed for indoor cats and others are for cats with intolerances and sensitive dispositions. There are also dry, wet and raw foods available, each with certain benefits. Make sure you do a bit of homework on your breed of cat to find a diet that will be suitable for them. If your cat lives solely indoors they’ll perhaps need an indoor cat food with fewer calories than an outdoor cat for instance. If you’re unsure, have a word with your vet to get their opinion. Ideally, you’ll feed them a mixture of wet and dry food. The former has a certain amount of water that will help keep our kitty’s water works in good health and the latter will help to keep their teeth sharp and clean. You may find your cat has a taste for certain flavours and textures, so you might want to try various foods to see what they like best. One thing to remember with food, is to make any changes incremental. Cat’s stomachs can be sensitive to change, so make sure you make the change gradually over a week or so - mixing and adding more of the new food to your cat’s existing one over a few days until they’re eating only the new recipe.   Keep your cat active This may seem obvious, but if you have an indoor cat for instance, they may be less active than their outdoor cousins. Ensure that your house is cat friendly and that there are things for your cat to do to keep well exercised. A tall scratch post tree with platforms is an essential item for every cat owner. This will give your cat chance to climb indoors and also stretch and scratch. Toys will also add a fun dimension to their indoor lifestyle. Provide a range of different catnip toys and teasers and your cat will never be bored   Spend time with your cat Socialising with your cat is super important for their wellbeing. Whilst cats can be very independent, they will also enjoy being around you. Some cats will relish being around you in fact and you may find they follow you around and sit on your lap.  This bonding time is good for their contentment and wellbeing. Grooming is also a great way to spend quality time with them. Some long-haired cats will need lots of daily grooming, but even if you have a short haired breed a daily brush will keep their coat in good condition and allow you to spend some time together.   Keep your cat’s vaccinations up to date All pets should be vaccinated as kittens and then will need yearly boosters to keep them up-to-date. Your vet should let you know when your next vaccination is due, but it’s always good to keep a record on the calendar. If you ever need to put your cat in a cattery for a holiday, you’ll need proof that they’re fully vaccinated   Ensure they’re microchipped Another thing that may seem obvious to some, but surprisingly not all cats are microchipped. Microchipping is essential as it will help to trace your kitten if they get lost. Even indoor cats will benefit from a microchip - having lived indoors their whole life, if they do manage to stray outside, they won’t be familiar with their surroundings and are likely to get lost. A microchip is a great way of tracking a cat’s owner and will increase the chances of your cat being returned home.   Keep your cat’s indoor environment safe Cat proofing your home is essential for all kitty parents. Some houseplants and human foods are toxic to cats. If ingested, some of these toxic substances can cause severe illness and even death so it’s important to know what is and isn’t cat friendly. Make sure your cat can’t get to any of these to ensure their safety. And remember that cats climb! Don’t leave anything that could possibly cause harm on work surfaces or tabletops, but rather keep them locked in cupboards.   Keep their teeth healthy Cat teeth need to be monitored just like human teeth. Your vet should check their teeth and gums as part of their routine check-ups and should let you know if extra care is needed. Quite often dry food and dental treats are enough to keep your cat’s teeth in good condition. There are also cat toothpaste products and brushes available if they’ll let you brush them. Some cats won’t like this though and may need to see the vet to have them cleaned if the vet thinks it necessary. We hope you've found some valuable information in this week's article. Of course, it's important to monitor our cat's physical and mental health at all times of year, but we thought National Cat Month was the perfect time to really focus on it. If you have any questions do get in touch. If you're particularly worried about any aspect of your cat's health always speak to your vet who will be able to give you the best tailored advice.

Lords & Labradors Puppy Essentials Pack Unboxing

Are you getting a new puppy? If the answer is yes and you still need to buy everything you'll need then one of our Puppy Essentials Packs might be just the thing you need. Each pack contains a number of daily must-haves that every puppy needs. Here we've created an unboxing video so you can see what to expect in the packs:   Lords & Labradors Puppy Packs and Daily Essentials Our puppy packs are designed to take the stress out of shopping for your new puppy. They contain all of the main items that you'll need to look after your puppy and their daily needs. From a cosy bed for napping to various toys for playtime; some feeding accessories for dinner time to a first walking set for lead training, we've tried to cover the main areas of a puppy's daily routine. The main contents of our puppy packs are as follows: Puppy Bed - Each set comes with a cosy puppy bed designed and handmade here in our workshop. The bed is a good size to use in half of your crate for crate training or can be used as a standalone bed outside of the crate in whatever area you choose for puppy to sleep.  Puppy Scent Blanket - Our puppy scent blankets are crafted from luxurious velvets and backed in sherpa fleece. They are a brilliant size to give to your breeder before you collect your puppy - the blanket can be kept with mum and pup up until you bring them home, then when you do bring pup home you can bring the blanket with them and they'll have the comforting scent of mum with them. The scent blankets will probably be loved for a lifetime just like a human baby's first blanket!  Puppy Training Pads - A must-have for any new puppy, training pads can be used in the house and the crate as a precaution in case of any accidents. Whilst we all do our best to take puppies out regularly to train them to toilet outside, it's a well known fact that little puppies have tiny bladders and accidents are definitely going to happen. Our puppy pads offer a clean and hygenic way to stop accidents from soiling your floor.   Puppy Bowls - We've included two Beco food bowls so that you can feed and water your pup. These are eco-friendly and easily washable. Puppy travel Bowl - A super handy pop-up travel bowl is ideal for drinks of water on the go. You might need to use it on your trip home if you're collecting your puppy a long way from home. They'll also come in handy to keep in your travel kit for trips to the vet, day trips and longer journeys on holiday. Puppy Teething Toys - Puppies go through their teething phase at a young age so providing them with chew toys to relieve the discomfort is a must. Chew toys are also a great boredom buster for avid chewers. Some dogs will enjoy chewing even after teething, so a chew toy is a handy way to divert their attention from soft furnishings or their bed!   Puppy Plush Toy - A snuggle buddy is also a welcome addition to your pup's toy box. They are great for gentle playtime games as well as a cuddle at nap or bedtime.  Puppy Training Treats - Training treats are an essential for any dog owner. You'll need them to reward your puppy for good behaviour and also help with training. We've included them in our puppy packs so that you can start your puppy's training regime as you mean to go on! Puppy Grooming Products - All puppies will need some kind of grooming - longer haired breeds more than others, but all will need an occasional bath and a daily brush. We've included some puppy products by Animology and a slicker brush that is gentle enough for little puppies, but also good enough to use into adulthood. Do check with your breeder if you're getting a long haired breed to see what other grooming products they recommend. Some breeds such as Afghan Hounds and Poodles will need more grooming than other shorter haired breeds.  Puppy Walking Set - We've included a walking set in our puppy pack so that you can start your puppy's lead training as soon as they are old enough. Walking will become a daily must to keep your pup fit and healthy. This collar and lead set will be perfect for getting them used to being on a lead.  There are three sizes of Puppy Pack available, each designed for different sized breeds. We have a Small pack for toy and small breed puppies; a medium pack for medium breeds and a large pack for large/giant breed puppies. Each pack has very similar contents with items in sizes that are suitable for the recommended size of puppy.

The Best Catnip & Teaser Toys for Cats

It is no secret that cats like to play. Their unique natural instincts, to hunt, chase, climb and scratch make them playful animals. Top Tips For Senior Dogs In Winter

Top Tips For Senior Dogs In Winter

Winter brings with it challenges for all dogs of all breeds and ages, but senior dogs in particular can find the Winter months rather difficult. Just like humans, dogs tend to become frailer in old age and can suffer from common conditions like arthritis and other aches and pains. Whilst it’s important to look out for, and take care of, these maladies at any time of the year, it’s especially important in the winter when symptoms are often exacerbated by the cold. Here we run through some top tips for older dogs in the Winter…   Winter Care Guide for Senior Dogs Keep them warm  The number one priority in Winter is to help your senior dog keep warm. Older dogs naturally find it harder to regulate their body temperature. Older dogs may also suffer from arthritis and other conditions that can feel even worse in cold temperatures, so ensuring their muscles stay warm is really important. Provide layers on their bed As we said before, senior pets can find it hard to keep a regular body temperature at any time of the year. Cosy dog beds with faux fur toppers or self-heating capabilities are a couple of options for their winter bed. You could add extra layers in the form of pet blankets too, to make it even warmer. Provide more than one bed, with varying layers so they can choose to move if they get too hot. If your dog has mobility issues or arthritis, consider a memory foam orthopaedic bed like the one by Scruffs. The foam inner will help to support their bodies and help to lower themselves and get back up when they need to. They are ideal for dogs with any kind of joint issues. Consider a jumper or other cold weather clothing Even when they are in the house, some older dogs with arthritis or other ailments will benefit from a layer of clothing such as a dog jumper or fleece. When going outside they’ll probably need a coat too. Every dog will have slightly different needs, so if you’re unsure, ask your vet what kind of products they think are best. Ensure Gentle exercise continues Your older dog will probably require shorter walks than their younger relatives even in normal conditions. But when the weather becomes really cold it’s even more important to keep those outdoors walks short. It’s really good for your dog to get outside if possible as it gives them a chance to stretch their legs properly, get some fresh air and stimulate their senses. You might wish to read our How Cold is Too Cold to Walk Your Dog article where we discuss walking your dog in wintery conditions. Provide Indoor Activities This is important at any time of year for senior dogs, as you will want to keep their brains active. But in winter, it may be that some days they don’t get outside for more than ten minutes, or even at all. Providing interactive toys and games that they can do at their own pace will stimulate their minds and help to keep muscles exercised. Treat games and puzzles are both brilliant ways to keep your senior dog engaged and exercised. Try a treat stuffed KONG Wobbler or something similar that allows for gentle, stimulating fun. Check that their diet is suitable It’s important to make sure you’re feeding your dog the right amount of the right types of food, no matter the time of year, but it may be that this is tweaked slightly for the winter months. Whatever you do, ensure you feed a complete dog food designed especially for senior dogs which will give them the right number of calories for their size and age. There are many types available. If you want to ensure your dog is getting the right nutrients for their breed and age, you can always ask your vet for advice on the food that you’re feeding them. Add relevant supplements to their diet There are a number of supplements available for dogs, each designed to help a part of the body or relieve symptoms of certain conditions. Supplements can be a great addition to any dog's diet but are especially useful in older age when dogs are more likely to suffer from muscle aches and other age-related conditions. Animology produce a brilliant range of dog supplements. There is a formula specifically for senior dogs as well as other ones for Body & Hair and Hips & Joints.  Go for regular Vet check ups Keep an eye on their condition and get regular check-ups at the Vet if you think anything has changed. As we mentioned before, it is quite normal for senior dogs to develop conditions such as arthritis. Whilst these conditions may not be ideal, there are things we can do to alleviate the symptoms. Consider trying some of the supplements that we mentioned above to help. We hope you find our tips helpful this winter season. There’s no reason, with a little care and attention, that your senior dog can’t enjoy this time of year as much as any other. If you have any questions about any products mentioned in the blog, please do get in touch. We're always happy to help!

The Best Dog Chew Toys

Playtime has so many benefits for puppies and dogs. It helps them to learn, encourages brain development, stops boredom creeping in and, when it includes human interaction, allows you to spend precious time with your pup. In previous articles we have discussed some of our favourite squeaky toys and plush toys; now it’s time to explore some of our favourite chew toys for dogs. Dog chew toys are brilliant boredom busters for older dogs and are also ideal for teething puppies. They come in a range of sizes, shapes and colours that all offer something slightly different. If you’re looking for some new toys for your dog’s toys box, then take a look at our list of top chew toys for dogs.   Our Favourite Chew Toys and Teethers for Puppies We’ll start with chew toys for puppies as these are some of the first toys you’ll buy as a puppy owner. Chew toys always pop up on our puppy essentials lists as they are such practical items. We suggest using them when you’re crate training your puppy to encourage them not to chew their bedding; and they’re also a must when it comes to teething. Puppies go through a similar teething phase to human babies when they’ll want to chew and suck on things to soothe their aching gums. Our selection of puppy teethers will help to relieve the discomfort and keep boredom at bay too. Here are our favourites: KONG Goodie Bone - We all know KONG for their super durable toys that are designed and made especially for chewing. Their puppy range is made with small jaws and new teeth in mind. This bone is ideal for teething puppies and can be stuffed with treats to make play time tasty too! The rope is great for tug-of-war and the chew toy the other end is perfect for teething puppies to play with   Our Favourite Chew Toys for Adult Dogs As any dog owner will tell you, it isn’t only puppies who are partial to chewing. Stuff with treats and watch your dog have loads of interactive fun. Grubber Interactive Rugby Ball - This durable ball is everything your pet needs for a healthy and fun lifestyle. National Train Your Dog Month

January is National Train Your Dog Month; the month when dog owners, trainers and pet experts join forces to celebrate all things canine by sharing what they know. It’s the perfect time for new puppy owners to gain lots of valuable information and top tips. Training isn’t just for new puppies though, but is for dogs of all ages. You may have adopted an adult dog and need to help them settle in to their new home and routine. Training will help to do both of these things. Here we take a closer look at what National Train Your Dog Month is and how you can get involved. We will also share a couple of past articles that you may find helpful with your dog training journey!   What is National Train Your Dog Month? National Train Your Dog Month was first set up by The Association of Pet Dog Trainers to promote positive methods of training your dog. The month of January was chosen, as many dogs are adopted during this time of year. Training your puppy or dog is an important part of their development and will help them to socialise and settle them in to their new home easily. Unfortunately, many dogs end up in shelters due to lack of good training. This month is all about promoting positive training methods, to help prevent unnecessary rehoming. Having the right resources on hand is key to getting your training regime just right.   How To Train Your Dog or Puppy We wrote a really handy guide on How To Train Your Puppy in which we talked about key training fields: sitting, training to stay and how to stop biting. Along with house training and crate training, these are some of the most important things to consider which will help to give your dog good manners and help with obedience.  We’d suggest reading the full article to learn some effective ways to teach these to your puppy.  To go along with the article we've listed some handy 'do’s' and 'don’ts', that will help you with the training process. Do’s For Training Your Dog Do: know your dog’s natural instincts and work with them rather than against them. Try not to confuse your dog or end up teasing them. Do: be consistent with rewards. Try to ensure that you only give your dog their reward once a task is completed. Do: be patient - training takes time and perseverance. Don’t forget that your dog may not understand the command straight away. But stick with it, they will learn eventually. Do: teach your dog one command at a time. Don’t mix things up as they may get confused! Do: try commands in different locations. Once your dog has mastered a command at home, it’s time to try it in different settings such as in a crowd or on a busy street. Don’ts For Training Your Dog Don’t: scold your dog or use their name in a negative way. You don’t want them to associate their name with something negative. Don’t: give any treats before they have completed a task. Don’t: reward your dog or give too much attention if they behave badly. Don’t: ever hit your dog. Don’t: keep repeating a command and let him ignore it until you stop.      Find a Professional Dog Trainer If you think you’d like some help with your pup’s training, you might like to consider finding a professional dog trainer. A professional trainer will give you lots of guidance and tips to ensure you are using best practices when it comes to teaching your dog. If you are trying to find a suitable trainer in your area, make sure you check the Animal Behaviour & Training Council (ABTC) as recommended by the RSPCA. The ABTC is a charity dedicated to the welfare of animals and pets undergoing training and provide a list of dog trainers with a search function allowing you to find trainers in specific areas. If you are going to go down the trainer route, it is important that you find one with appropriate skills and training methods. Some training methods are not good for your dog and can lead to behavioural issues - so make sure you do some research first and select a good trainer. If you are thinking of trying a class, perhaps ask if you can observe before taking your pup along. You should be able to judge what the trainer is like and that the class covers the things that you need.   Training Time is Bonding Time Don’t forget, training isn’t only about teaching, but can also provide a lot of fun for both you and your dog. Just like humans, dogs love mental stimulation. Training gives them a chance to learn and use their brain whilst having fun at the same. They will also love the opportunity to spend valuable time with you. Dogs have long been known as “man’s best friend” and training is just one more opportunity to build a solid lasting friendship!   Dog Training Products and Accessories At lords & Labradors we have a great range of products that will help you on your dog training journey.
