Help! My Puppy Won't Stop Chewing!
16.01.19 January 16, 2019 Getting A Puppy Featured

Help! My Puppy Won't Stop Chewing!

Are you the proud new parent of a puppy? Are you thinking, “Help! My Puppy Won’t Stop Chewing!”? We understand all the obstacles that are involved with settling in a new pup and thought we’d discuss the common issue of chewing. It’s important to understand what the root cause of the chewing is; not only do teething puppies chew, but older dogs suffering from separation anxiety can also pick up this bad habit. Here we discuss a few ideas to help with the problem… 1. Puppy Teethers [product] It is important to provide your new pup with a good quality puppy teether that will help with the teething process. Playtime will also keep your pup entertained and help with their development and learning. 2. Dog Repellant Spray [product] A dog repellant spray is a good option for both puppies and adult dogs. Our Get Off Spray can be used on any soft furnishings or other areas of the house that you wish to deter them from. Not only good for chewing, but helps train pets not to foul indoors or other areas too. 3. Dog Chew Toys [product] It may be that your adult dog has a tendency to chew, in which case a good quality chew toy is a must. The Classic Kong is one of the most popular  options, they even have an extreme version for heavy duty chewers, but we also love the Gnosher toys which are flavoured like chicken and bacon so will keep your puppy entertained for hours. Chew toys will help keep your puppy out of mischief and stop them from chewing your soft furnishings. 4. Give Them Plenty of Exercise The cause of your pup’s chewing habits may well be boredom. Provide them plenty of dogs toys to play with and give them lots of exercises to keep their minds active. Exercise produces endorphins in your dog which will help calm them. 5. Make Sure it isn’t a Case of Separation Anxiety Chewing and other destructive behaviours can be a sign of more serious problems. If you suspect your pup’s behaviour is due to separation anxiety, you should make an appointment to see your vet. Whatever the problem, there is always an answer. It’s important not to panic; all dogs will have a tendency to chew at some point. It’s just a matter of finding the root cause and training as required. Provide plenty of toys and activities for your dogs to keep their minds active and you shouldn’t have too many problems. If you have any further questions about this or any other topic, do get in touch. We are always happy to help as best we can.

Keep Your Pets Safe This Winter

Keep Your Pets Safe This Winter

Winter is only just around the corner. We’ve already had the first frost of the year and the average temperatures are beginning to fall. There’s a certain romance to the Winter season with it’s crisp air and sugar dusted landscapes, but there are also some things to be cautious of. Frost and snow have a certain charm when enjoyed from indoors, but whilst beautiful are not ideal conditions for pets to be venturing out in. Here we take a look at some of the precautions you can take so you can keep your pet safe this Winter.   Keep Them Indoors This may sound obvious, but it’s surprising how many cats enjoy the colder weather, and of course your dog still needs his exercise. On the very coldest days, try to keep your cats and dogs inside as much as possible. Extremely cold temperatures can be dangerous to exposed skin.   Keep Them Away From Anti-Freeze Anti-freeze is highly poisonous to animals. Be careful when using it and clean up any spills immediately.   Protect Their Paws Ice alone can be detrimental to paws, but road salt and other de-icing materials can be toxic to both cats and dogs. We have seen horrific pictures in the past of dogs paws with chemical burns from prolonged exposure to salt. When salting your own driveways, try to use non-toxic salt and then when your cat or dog comes back inside, clean their paws thoroughly to remove any salt and also check in between pads and toes for any ice. If there’s prolonged snow and ice and you ned to take your dog out for exercise, you could invest in some snow boots to protect them from the elements.   Get Him A Coat When walking your dog it may be best for them to wear a coat or jumper. This is especially important for fine haired breeds to protect them from the elements. Most cats will probably prefer not to wear a jumper of coat, but if yours doesn’t mind then it might be an idea to allow him to wear it on the coldest days. Do keep an eye on them though and don’t allow them out far when wearing it; you don’t want the jumper or coat to get snagged on anything in case of injury. Check Your Car Before Starting It If you have an outdoor cat or you know there are outdoor cats in the neighourhood, always check your car before starting it up in the morning. Some cats will climb up inside cars to sleep near warm engines. Bang on your car bonnet a couple of times before you start your engine. You may just save the life of your pet or a neighbourhood stray.   Keep them Active Indoors In prolonged spells of severe weather you may choose to keep your pets inside a lot more than usual. Provide plenty of toys for them to keep them occupied whilst indoors. This will provide exercise and help keep their brains active too.   Be Wary of Reduced Visibility Make your pets visible when outdoors in foggy or snowy weather. Reflective collars and a small light attachment can help keep your pets visible. When walking your dog perhaps keep him on his lead; if you’re going to let him run free make sure they have good recall to avoid them getting lost. Keep micro chip details up to date with your correct contact information.   Don’t Leave your Dog Alone in the Car Unattended Just as cars become incredibly hot in the Summer, the temperature will drop very quickly during in the Winter. Always take your dog with you rather than leaving them in the car for any length of time.   Keep them Warm & Dry If your pets do go out in the wet and cold, make sure you dry them off thoroughly after walks and ensure they have a cosy bed to relax in.   Winter at Lords & Labradors… There’s no reason you can’t enjoy the Winter months. Here are a few or our seasonal items to help keep your pets cosy this Winter…

Remembering Our Four-Legged Heroes

Remembering Our Four-Legged Heroes

This weekend we will be remembering the millions of men and women who gave their lives on behalf of their country. In Great Britain, Armistice Day is observed with a tribute of silence at the 11thhour, of the 11thday, of the 11thmonth, when the great war ended. Not only will we remember our human heroes, but our four-legged heroes too. Millions of men, women and animals of all kinds died during the wars. Many dogs were used in a variety of ways including as messengers, sentry dogs and casualty dogs. Between 1914 and 1939, 54 animals were awarded the Dickin medal for honour, service and bravery. Amongst those awarded were 18 dogs and 1 cat. Possibly the most decorated dog of all was Sergeant Stubby who was smuggled onboard a ship of American soldiers during the First World War. He went on to receive the title of Sergeant after serving in the trenches for 18 months. He helped locate injured soldiers, warned of imminent gas attacks and was even credited with detecting a German Spy and assisting in his capture. It wasn’t just cats and dogs who served in the Wars either, but horses and pigeons too. In fact, it is thought that around 100,000 of the latter were used as messengers in the Great War and double that in the second world war. The sacrifices made by so many animals is hard to fathom. Don’t forget to pay tribute to the animals of the war as well as our human veterans this remembrance Sunday.

Top 3 Car Seat Covers For Travelling With Your Dog

Top 3 Car Seat Covers For Travelling With Your Dog

We’re pretty much through the transitional from Summer into Autumn. We’ve officially seen the Autumn equinox and the climate is most certainly cooler and a little damper. But who doesn’t love a dewy morning dog walk? Or a wander through the woods as the leaves have changed from green to golden brown and red?! With the changing climate comes the change in weather and we’ve already got out our Wellington Boot’s and wax jackets hooked at the back door ready for Winter walks. But what other Autumn essentials might you need for canine adventures in the great outdoors at this time of year? We’ve talked about a few different accessories in our mini Designed for the Road Series, this week it’s Car Seat Covers. Car seat covers are perfect at this time of year. When your four-legged friends jump back in the car, any wet or muddy paws will mark the cover and not your precious car furnishings. Not only this, but they double up as seat covers for any dirty jobs. So you’ll be prepared for everything such as a trip to the recycle yard or a day at the garden centre. So, what are the options you may ask?   KONG 2-in-1 Seat Cover & Hammock This handy seat cover acts as both a hammock or simple seat cover protecting your seats, keeping muddy, wet paws at bay. The cover is made from a durable waterproof quilted fabric and features two-way mesh window for visibility and air flow and two storage pockets where you can store some puppy wipes or other canine essentials. The car seat cover is 146cm wide and will fit over the seats of most cars; this will become a must-have item for any dog owner come winter.   Pet Rebellion Car Defender If you have a larger dog or prefer to travel with your dog in the boot, the Car Defender might be more appropriate. This style covers both the boot for your dog to lay and folds down over the external of your car, so your car isn't marked whilst your dog jumps in. Made from absorbent and fully machine washable fabric, the defender mat is durable and non-slip; easy to install and remove. It comes in a handy universal size at 100 x 145cm.   Pet Rebellion Car Seat Carpet  If you prefer to travel with your dog in the back seat, then the Pet Rebellion Car Seat Carpet is the option for you. This sits over a single back seat to protect your car from your dog’s paws. Like the options above, the car seat carpet is also crafted from a durable, absorbent fabric. The design is ideal for putting in your front and back seat, whatever is yours or your pets preference. The car seat carpet is non slip, anti-bacterial and absorbent, everything you'll need post those winter walks!   Don’t forget that whichever you choose, you will still need to make sure your dog is secure in the car, either in a crate or with a doggy seatbelt or car harness. The law now requires that all dogs are travelled securely in the car for both their and your safety. Once you have a car cover, you’ll wonder how you managed without! No more scrubbing paw prints from your car’s furnishings! You’ll be able to just pop these covers in the wash whilst your car stays spotless. And as mentioned before, the covers are practical for all sorts of other household chores; making that trip to the builder’s merchants or garden centre that little easier to clean up after. If you have any questions about this blog, do get in touch. We’re always happy to help, no matter how big or small the query. If you’re looking for other travel items not mentioned in this blog, then do go back and catch up with the other articles in the series. We’ve covered everything from travel crates to drying coats… Finally, we’d love to hear about your experiences travelling with your pet. Whether it’s about one of our products or just a random story about adventures with your four-legged family members. Message us on social media platforms, send us your pictures; we might even post your image on our own social channel (with your permission of course!)

Everything You Need For Your New Pug
25.09.18 September 25, 2018 Dog Breed Guide Featured

Everything You Need For Your New Pug

Are you about to become the proud parent of a puppy pug?! First of all, congratulations; you have super exciting times ahead, getting to know your new furry family member. Of course, they are a big responsibility and you’re probably also anxious to make sure you get everything just right. Here we take a look at the origins of the breed, some famous owners and of course look at the breed characteristics to help you decide what you will need to have prepared for the arrival of your new little one. Pugs are a lovely breed, originally bred as companion pets for the ruling families of China. Through the ages they became popular with the Royal families of Europe and may well have been bred with the old type Kind Charles Spaniel, giving the modern King Charles Spaniel its Pug characteristics. Famous owners of Pugs have included William Hogarth and Queen Victoria of England. The Queen’s involvement with dog’s helped to establish the Kennel Club. Pugs are a small breed with shorter snouts and prominent brow ridges. They can be susceptible to eye injuries and like other brachycephalic breeds, they can suffer from breathing difficulties. We’d suggest regular Vet checks if you’re unsure of the health of your pug and swapping out a collar and lead for a harness to help relieve any stress on their breathing when out walking. Known for their charming personality, pugs are strong willed but rarely aggressive and they make wonderful family pets. Pugs are playful and love human interaction, making them perfect companions.   Puppy Pug Shopping List We would suggest a 30" metal crate with L&L furnishings. Initially pop a puppy bed in one half and a puppy pad in the other with a water bowl. This is the ideal setup for crate training and the nighttime routine as your puppy won't be able to hold themselves all the way through the night. As they grow older and become potty trained, you can swap out the puppy bed and pads for a full size crate cushion - your puppy will love their den well into adulthood!   Pug puppy bed When it comes to selecting a bed for your new pug puppy, there are two things to bear in mind. The first is that pugs are prone to joint issues as they grow up, especially involving their hip joints. For this reason, choosing a bed for your pup that can provide the right amount of support and cushioning under their body while they sleep can make a big difference. The second factor to consider is hygiene. Pug puppies and senior pugs may be prone to anything from a full accident to small dribbles of pee while they sleep. With this in mind, choosing a bed that has a removable and fully washable cover is always a good idea. We would suggest a bed like the Cosy & Calm Puppy Box Bed in either small or medium size.   Puppy pads for pugs Pugs are highly intelligent dogs and typically fairly easy to potty train. That being said, puppy training pads are a must have for new puppies. Although training your pug to do their business outside should be quite straightforward, accidents are unavoidable when bringing home a new pug. For this reason, training pads should be put on the floor of your puppy’s crate at nighttime for the first few weeks, as well as in their playpen and near a door during the day. When used correctly, these pads make the potty training period quick, clean and hassle-free.   Pug playpen Pug puppies are full of energy, sometimes making it difficult to keep an eye on them when you need to attend household chores. In this regard, a playpen can be a great help. Giving your pup plenty of space to play in while also allowing you to restrict them to one area of the home or garden and keep an eye on them with ease, playpens can help new pug pups feel more secure in their new environment, providing them with a space aside from their crate that they can call their own. When it comes to choosing the right size pen, it’s important to remember that you need to be able to comfortably fit a bed and a water bowl in the pen, as well as enough room to play. As a rule, we would recommend selecting a playpen that provides between 3.5 and 5 square metres of space for your pug to play in.   Best feeding bowls for pugs Being deep chested, your pug will eat and drink more comfortably from a slightly raised bowl. The white wooden dining set in the small size, for example, is ideal for pug puppies. The metal bowls are removable and washable, making it super practical, and the white wooden frame will look stylish in any interior.   Pug puppy accessories The first items new puppy owners need to buy include collars, leads and harnesses.  We particularly like the Front Range harness by Ruffwear for the pug breed. A harness will offer support and comfort when walking your pup and stop any stress around the neck area caused when using a traditional collar and lead. Try the Hi & Light design when they're a tiny puppy and size up to a Front Range harness as they grow into an adult. From a grooming point of view, Animology clean sheets are a great idea for pugs. Pugs have naturally wrinkly faces and clean sheets from Animology are a practical and easy way to keep them clean. They are vitamin enriched and great for deodorising and degreasing. Totally puppy safe, they are handy to have with you when travelling too, to keep your pup clean on the move. Pugs also have soft paw pads, and walking on concrete and other rough surfaces can irritate them. The Wildwash Paw Balm is a natural balm that will keep their paws healthy and soft. A must-have for your pug grooming kit.   Pug puppy toys Pugs are happy to go with the flow and do pretty much what their owner does. This can mean lazing in front of the tv and not being the most active. However, it’s important to play with your pug and keep them as active as possible. It’s good for their brain stimulation as well as helping to keep their weight consistent. A KONG puppy teething stick is a great addition to their toy box. It will keep teething puppies occupied whilst offering fun at the same time. Puppies love playing ball and this offers an interactive game with their human family members. This Kong ball has a hole in which you can stuff with treats or peanut butter for tasty playtime fun!   Best Pug puppy training treats Pugs are famously unfussy when it comes to food. However, this can be to their detriment as they are also susceptible to a number of diet-related health conditions. For this reason, knowing which treats are best for your new pug pup is vitally important. Here at Lords & Labradors, we suggest starting your new pup with either low-calorie Pooch & Mutt Puppy Development Treats or Organic Pet Munchies Dog Training Treats. Remember, your new pug will spend the first few months of their lives constantly learning and developing, and training treats should only be used to encourage good behaviour. Of course this isn’t the definitive list of everything you need for your new pug, but rather a list of things that will suit the pug breed specifically. Also think about their food; your breeder should let you know what your pup has grown up eating and it’s probably best to stick with that, at least for the first few months. Our Welcome to the World Puppy Packs are also worth a look for some of the other items to think about when adopting a new puppy.

Will This Dog Crate Be The Right Fit For My Dog?

Will This Dog Crate Be The Right Fit For My Dog?

Dog crates are a really important accessory for most dog owners. They are not only practical when you first bring your pup home but are just as useful for adult dogs; making a good bed when at home, a private place for them to relax. Choosing the right size for your pup isn’t always a straight-forward choice. We always suggest buying the crate in a size that will be suitable for your dog once an adult, even if you’re buying it for a puppy. You can start off by dividing the crate to make the space smaller initially and then changing the space as he grows up. So if you’re thinking, “Will This Dog Crate Be the Right Fit for My Dog?”, you’ve come to the right place! Read on to find out a little more about each crate style and it’s sizing. Lords & Labradors Crates Our most popular crates, the Lords & Labradors deluxe dog crates are available in three colours and five sizes. As a guide we’d recommend a crate that is around 3-4” taller than your adult dog will grow to. There should be plenty of room for your dog to stand and move around in the crate without feeling cramped. The longer you intend to keep them inside their crate (we don’t recommend keeping them in there too long) the more space you may wish to give them.       Which size for which breed? A guide; Small 24 (measures 24.5” x 18” x 20.9” High):  Teacup breeds and puppies Medium 30 (measures 30.2” x 19.5” x 21.9” High): Small breeds such as Pomeranians, Shih Tzu, Miniature Dachshunds etc. Large 36 (measures 26.5” x 23” x 25.8” High): Medium breeds such as Cockapoos, Beagles, Springer Spaniels etc. Extra Large 42 (measures 42.5” x 28.5” x 30.5” High): Large breeds such as Boxers, Labradors, Dalmatians etc. Extra Extra Large 48 (measures 48.5” x 29.5” x 32.7” High): Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, German Shepherds etc. Remember this is just a guide. Dogs, like humans, can vary in size so it might be worth talking to your breeder if you’re expecting a new pup, to gauge how big they are likely to grow. Having said that, we’d always suggest choosing bigger rather than smaller. Your dog can’t have too much room so if it’s a little on the big side it won’t matter.    Wooden Sliding Door Dog Crate A really popular choice for those looking for a dog crate that will look great in your home, the Lords & Labradors Wooden Sliding Door Dog Crate is an attractive piece of furniture. This comes in one size as follows: 40.4" x 27.1" x 28.1": recommended for Cockapoos, Springer Spaniels and bulldogs Its sliding door design eliminates the bulky swing door, while its beautiful finish adds a touch of class that fits any interior decor. Easily assemble in minutes and you can even choose between two beautiful colours to find your perfect fit.  Which should you choose for your dog? So which should you choose? There are no set rules as to which crate you should pick. The main thing to be aware of is the size and picking a crate that is big enough. We always suggest choosing the size required for their adult size, if in doubt as your pup can’t really have too much room, and they grow quickly. Other than that, it really comes down to personal preference and which suits your taste aesthetically. If you’re still unsure, do give us a call. We’re happy to discuss your requirements and the differences between each type of crate. Give us a call or chat to us on LiveChat and we’ll do all we can to help you choose the most suitable items.

Luxury Pet Accessories

Luxury Pet Accessories

There has long been competition between the high street and luxury brands, not just in the pet industry, but in almost every sector. Do you choose that beautiful Loaf sofa you saw in sumptuous velvet, or go for the cheaper, almost identical sofa you found for a fraction of the price? You know it won’t last half as long or be anywhere near as comfortable, but the look is the same right? Quality or quantity; that is the question! There are pros and cons for both and I suppose often it can come down to your lifestyle, how you use the item and what your budget is. At Lords & Labradors our philosophy is to buy fewer, better quality items that we really love and know will last. This is reflected in everything we make and the brands we choose to work with. From the smallest accessories such as cat and dog toys and feeding bowls through to investment pieces such as our signature crate sets and doggy chesterfields, we put every thought into the items we offer. We’d like to think of our brand as a good mix of practicality and style; with a selection of premium quality, investment items together with affordable everyday essentials that your dogs and cats will love.   Premium Pet Brands at Lords & Labradors We have tried to source all the best pet products we can find; a fusion of beautiful aesthetics with everyday durability. We offer brands such as the eco-friendly Beco pet range, stylish, beautifully made collars from Dogs & Horses and the award winning Catit range for your fussy felines. There is something for every part of your cat’s and dog’s lives: eating, playing, travelling, sleeping; you name it, we’ve thought about it! We really try to source items that are good quality but don’t break the bank; a fusion of durability, good craftsmanship, eyecatching looks and value for money.   Bespoke Pet Accessories at Lords & Labradors The idea for Lords & Labradors was founded on luxury for Pets. The first Lords & Labradors piece was the doggy Chesterfield sofa and the brand grew from there to include our ever-popular handmade crate cushions and covers. There is a wide selection of “off-the-peg” pieces to choose from, but there is also the option to have something made especially for your furry friend. All of our cushions and crate sets can be made to custom sizes if you already have a crate of your own, we can personalise them with your dog’s name and we can even make something in a fabric of your choice*. We understand how important your pets are and we know that sometimes only the best will do! There are also custom options when ordering Minkeys Tweed coats: have an especially long bodied dog or a dog with a thicker-than-average girth? Minkeys Tweed make all their coats to order and can make a bespoke size to fit your dog as well as their standard sizes. We also offer, hand-baked to order birthday cakes by Arton & Co. All of Artons treats and cakes are baked fresh from yummy ingredients with no nasty additives. Order a special cake for your pup and choose a special message to be hand written on top.     *If you would like us to make an item in a fabric of your choice, please contact us first to discuss requirements and fabric type suitable for the bespoke order.   Something For Every Budget We pride ourselves on sourcing items for every budget and our collections include pet accessories for every situation, type of dog and lifestyle that all have the Lords & Labradors stamp of approval.
